The designer and maker at Kristen Mara. I create jewelry to capture the soulful beauty of simple, organic form in the indelible medium of metal. Hand cast in 100% recycled sterling silver and bronze in my Connecticut studio, each piece is a unique fusion of timeless simplicity and sophisticated sensibility, designed to enhance your everyday style.
“It is always the simple that produces the marvelous.” – Amelia Barr
As a child I lived in North Africa, and traveled with my family into the Sahara and to the ruins of ancient Roman cities.
The raw beauty of the spare desert landscape, the ancient ruins and artifacts we found, worn by the passage of time, shaped my love of simple lines and form that I now translate into my designs.
Like the softened remnant pieces of ancient civilizations, I believe that it is the simple things of life that are the most enduring.
I use modern and ancient metalworking techniques to create my jewelry and each design may go through many iterations before it has the right balance, feel and expression.
In my first career I was an Environmental Marine Biologist and my commitment to protecting our environment remains a top priority. To create eco and socially-conscious jewelry I cast my designs in certified 100% recycled metals and source materials only from USA-based and socially responsible partners.
From our packaging to our jewelry, we keep it close to home: Kristen Mara designs are 100% made with love in the USA.
My memories of Bedouin and Arab women with stacks of silver bracelets and blue tattoos sparked my fascination with personal adornment, and the echoes of jingling silver bangles and hoop earrings swaying and glinting in the sun remain with me to this day.
While my nuclear family was globe trotting, my extended family lived in the American west. Visiting my grandparents’ small ranch meant Grandpa’s scuffed brown cowboy boots and Grandma’s high heeled red ones. It also meant real sage brush, high blue skies, western saddles and best of all, horses. A horse-lover's dream!
The foundation upon which my life as an artist began is richly diverse, and the development of my artistic vision intensely personal. Kristen Mara is me - my two given names. Kristen Mara is a tribute to my family and the many extraordinary experiences that shaped my artistic vision, and a celebration of my belief that we live our best life when we start from the place of connecting to our true self…
